Montréal en Lumière
Winter–especially in the north–is long, dreary, and frankly a bit depressing. Since 2000, Montréal en Lumière has been a defiant celebration that brings light, warmth, and excitement to wintertime. Held in the Quartier des Spectacles, it transforms the winter doldrums into a vibrant and engaging experience for Montrealers.
Mandate
The challenge was to design a wayfinding system and signage for the 2024 festival that not only effectively guided attendees but also captured the festival's unique personality. The signage needed to integrate seamlessly with the event, complementing rather than competing with the vibrant atmosphere.
Design Thinking
The signage needed to function seamlessly both day and night, so incorporating light was a logical starting point. I wanted the signage to be both effective and subtly decorative, complementing the festival's overall aesthetic without competing for attention. Recognizability and legibility from a distance were also crucial. On-site research, including considering crowd behavior, informed decisions about signage placement and height.
Design Making
Clear acrylic, chosen for its durability and weather resistance, became the primary material for the signage. It would be manufactured with intentional bubbles—normally considered a defect—to create a visual theme reminiscent of ice sculptures and falling snow, both fitting elements of a winter festival.
